HEALTH & SAFETY POLICY SECTION A GENERAL STATEMENT OF POLICY 1/ Overall and final responsibility for health and safety in the company is that of Mr Don Barker, Managing Director. 2/ Mr Don Barker is responsible for this policy being carried out at the premises at Bracken Edge Forge and Units R3 & G2, Elvington Industrial Estate. His deputy is Mr Trevor Clark. 3/ The following supervisors are responsible for safety in particular areas: Supervisor Area Any special responsibility Mr Andrew Brind Unit G2 Mr Trevor Clark Unit R3 Office Manager 4/ All employees have the responsibility to co-operate with supervisors and managers to achieve a healthy and safe workplace and to take reasonable care of themselves and others. 5/ Whenever an employee, supervisor or manager notices a health or safety problem which they are not able to put right, they must straightaway tell the appropriate person named above. They may also tell a safety representative if there is one. Consultation between management and employees is provided by personal contact on a daily basis. 6/ Other people responsible for: Safety training - Mr Trevor Clark Carrying out safety inspections - Mr Trevor Clark and Mr Don Barker Investigating accidents - Mr Don Barker Monitoring maintenance of plant and equipment - Mr Andrew Brind SECTION B GENERAL ARRANGEMENTS ACCIDENTS First Aid boxes are provided in: 1) Units 1 & 6 2) Works van The trained first aiders are Mr Don Barker and Mr Trevor Clark. The person responsible for the first aid boxes is Mrs Barbara Barker. The person responsible for reporting incidents is Mr Don Barker. The accident record is held in the Main Office. (0113 244 6191) TRAINING The person responsible for training is Mr Don Barker. SPECIAL TRAINING Power hammer operatives are trained over a period of three months to achieve the required level of competence. The person in charge is Mr Andrew Brind. CONTRACTORS AND VISITORS All contractors and visitors must report on arrival. Entry to workshops only when accompanied by a member of staff. All contractors and visitors are advised of the company’s Health and Safety rules and procedures before entering any workshops. When power hammer is being operated or when welding/cutting is carried out contractors and visitors are not allowed in the appropriate workshop area. If necessary such operations are halted when contractors and visitors are in the workshop. The company’s ‘No Smoking’ rule is strictly enforced at all times including all site work. HAZARDS Hazard sheets, data sheets and manufacturers’ guidance sheets are kept in the COSHH Assessment File in the Main Office and copies issued to the workshops when relevant products are in use. HOUSEKEEPING AND PREMISES Cleanliness: Workshop floors and benches are swept and cleared of waste and unwanted material daily. Waste disposal: Strictly in accordance with local authority requirements. Safe stacking and storage: Mild steel stock is stored only on storage racks. Flammable products only in suitable storage. Marking and keeping clear gangways, exits etc: Adequate gangways marked to fire exits, regular (daily) inspections. Checking equipment such as ladders: Daily visual checks or checks prior to use or weekly inspections for heavily used equipment. ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT Users visually check before use. Faulty or damaged equipment is taken out of use and problems reported and repairs/replacements carried out. Extension leads and portable equipment: Users visually check before use. All portable equipment is safely and adequately stored when not in use. An annual inspection of workshop installation and portable equipment with certification where required is carried out by a qualified electrical contractor. MACHINERY Only authorised and properly trained staff to use power hammer, metalworking machine, cutting/welding/grinding equipment, pneumatic needle gun and bending machine. Supervisor Equipment Frequency of checks Mr Andrew Brind Power hammer Weekly Mr Andrew Brind Other machinery Monthly DANGEROUS SUBSTANCES Data sheets for all dangerous substances in use in the workshops are held in Coshh Assessment and all staff are instructed in safe handling procedures. Where necessary personal protective equipment is available for use when handling hazardous substances. Before any new process likely to create risk is started staff are adequately instructed about its use. Possible areas of hazard/risk are discussed during daily contact between management and staff. FLUIDS UNDER PRESSURE Only properly trained staff are allowed to handle propane, oxygen, acetylene and Migweld. Only one replacement cylinder of each product is kept and properly secured on the premises. OTHER IMPORTANT HAZARDS Noise: Ear defenders are to be worn when operating particularly noisy equipment in enclosed spaces. Block/Tackle: Must always be checked before and after use. Company transport is only to be used by authorised staff holding a current driving licence. Maintenance procedures: All personal protective equipment is adequately stored and checked weekly for possible damage/faults. Block/tackle tested annually in accordance with regulations and insurance requirements. Company transport is serviced and maintained regularly by local garage. SUB-CONTRACT SITE WORK The Company complies with the requirements of the Health & Safety Policy of the Main Contractor responsible for overall site safety. Employees understand that it is their responsibility to use the safety equipment provided and to adhere to the Main Contractor’s Health and Safety Policy at all times. OTHER SITE WORK The Company provides hard hats, overalls, safety glasses, waterproof clothing, gloves, harnesses, first aid equipment and fire extinguishers for site work. Employees understand that it is their responsibility to use the safety equipment provided and to maintain it in good condition. PUBLIC SAFETY When working in areas used by the public, appropriate precautions such as warning signs and ropes and/or screens are used to protect the site from unauthorised access.
